carwash’s Lots Of Pop Mixtape Playlist Takeover
About carwash
“to feel like blurry photographs. i also make music as Postcard Boy :)”
In addition to the playlist takeover, we had a great conversation about some of his influences, personal insights, and more. Here’s what he said…
1. How did you start music?
I always wanted to do what my older sister was doing and she played piano first, but then started ukulele. I learned ukulele in fourth grade. I tried saxophone around the same time, but it didn’t stick for me. I honestly wish it did, to be good at saxophone now would be sick. I started doing acoustic guitar covers, really anything from Ed Sheeran to Phoenix. I wasn’t writing anything at all. It wasn’t until my sophomore year of high school that I wanted to get into producing electronic music. I was editing surf videos to a lot of electronic music I was into at the time. I started making songs on my computer because of that, but eventually got more into alternative stuff and those sonic worlds mixed.
2. What advice would you give to other artists trying to make it in the industry?
I made a few music friends online in the beginning. Although we were on other sides of the world, we would call all the time and chat it up about music. They would tell me stuff they’re into and vice versa. Looking back now, that friendship was really formative in how I progressed as a producer and songwriter. We would keep each other in check, tell eachother what we thought was cool and what was corny. It also gave all of us friends to lean on when we needed it, everyone gets into feelings of doubt surrounding their own music. They are my best friends til this day, even though a majority of our interaction is through a screen. Having friends that are walking through the process with you is amazing. It’s so rewarding seeing one of your friends do well or make something crazy. Having a friendship like that not only will keep you motivated, but also keeps it enjoyable and fun. One of the best things about music is that it brings people together and you can find a community of friend and cry about the same things.
3. What’s your favorite track on the playlist and why?
Probably “Larabar” by Wet. The vocal processing is so cool to me. The production is also perfect in my eyes. Oh, and the chorus melody is so good. I love it. The whole song is such a great blend of being melodically catchy while also being unpredictable and sonically so well textured.
4. If you could be a fruit, what fruit would you be and why?
I guess I would say nectarine. They just taste so sweet and tangy at the same time. To justify it for fun, I would say my artist projects feel double-sided. carwash and Postcard Boy are my sweet and tangy. Sometimes both.
